Synopsis
The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is Bangladesh’s top-tier professional Twenty20 cricket league. Founded in 2011 by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), the inaugural season was held in February 2012.
Structure & Format: The league features city- and division-based franchises representing regions across Bangladesh (such as Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, and Barishal). The tournament follows a double round-robin league stage leading into a four-game playoff system (Eliminator, Qualifier 1, Qualifier 2, and Final).
Roster Selection: Teams build their squads through direct signings and a player draft/auction system, combining international overseas talent with local Bangladeshi players.
Most Successful Franchises: Comilla Victorians is the most successful franchise in tournament history with four titles. The Dhaka franchise (playing historically under names like Dhaka Gladiators and Dhaka Dynamites) has also secured three championship trophies.
Statistical Milestones: Tamim Iqbal is the all-time leading run-scorer in BPL history, while all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan holds the record for the most wickets taken and has won the most Player of the Tournament awards.
Domestic Impact: The BPL serves as a key domestic platform for scouting and nurturing emerging Bangladeshi cricket talent while giving local players regular exposure alongside global international stars.
