Synopsis
The Pakistan Super League (PSL), officially known as the HBL PSL for sponsorship reasons, is Pakistan’s premier professional Twenty20 cricket league. Founded by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) in September 2015, the inaugural edition was played in 2016 in the United Arab Emirates before transitioning completely to home venues across Pakistan.
Draft & Player System: Unlike leagues that use open bidding auctions, the PSL utilizes a draft system to form rosters, categorizing domestic and international players into tiers (Platinum, Diamond, Gold, Silver, Emerging, and Supplementary).
Core Franchises: The league originally launched with five teams—Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, and Quetta Gladiators—before expanding to include Multan Sultans in 2018.
Format: Matches are contested in a double round-robin league stage followed by a Page playoff system (Qualifier, Eliminator 1, Eliminator 2, and the Final).
Key Championship Records: Islamabad United became the inaugural champion in 2016 and, alongside Lahore Qalandars, stands among the most successful franchises in tournament history. Every founding franchise has lifted the trophy at least once.
Statistical Milestones: Babar Azam leads the tournament in all-time aggregate runs, while fast bowlers like Wahab Riaz and Hasan Ali have consistently topped the historical wicket-taking charts. Season leaders are awarded the Green Cap (most runs) and the Maroon Cap (most wickets).
Revival of International Cricket: Beyond entertainment and player development, the PSL played an instrumental role in returning high-profile international cricket to Pakistan, gradually moving knockout matches and eventually entire tournaments back to Pakistani stadiums.
